The Starter Guide

How to Sell Life Insurance

A practical 90 day starter guide: get licensed, book appointments, run a simple presentation, and build referrals. No hype, just the work that moves the needle.

Step 01

Get licensed the right way

Before you sell anything, you need your state life insurance license. The process is straightforward: pre-licensing education, a state exam, a background check, and a carrier appointment once you join an agency.

  • Check your state's pre-licensing hour requirements.
  • Study in short, daily blocks instead of one cram session.
  • Schedule your exam while the material is fresh.
  • Get contracted with a carrier through your agency after you pass.
Step 02

Book appointments before anything else

Sales skills are really appointment skills. Nothing in this business moves until someone sits down with you, in person or on a video call. Your first 90 days should be weighted heavily toward setting and running appointments, not perfecting your knowledge.

Start with a simple list: people you know, people they know, and professionals in your area who serve the same families you want to help. Aim for a consistent weekly activity number you control, like ten conversations per day.

Step 03

Run a simple, honest presentation

You do not need a memorized script that sounds like a script. You need a repeatable flow: ask about their family and goals, show them what happens if the unexpected hits, and present coverage that fits their actual budget.

A plain opener that works:

"Thanks for sitting down with me. Before I show you anything, I'd like to understand what you're protecting. Tell me about your family and what peace of mind looks like for you."

Objections are normal. Hear them fully, acknowledge them, and answer with a question that gets back to what they said they wanted to protect.

Step 04

Keep your pipeline full

Lead generation is a system, not a mood. New agents do best with three lanes running at once: warm market referrals from every appointment, carrier or agency lead programs, and consistent activity on one social platform where your ideal clients already spend time.

  • Ask every client and prospect for one referral, every time.
  • Track activity, not just results: conversations, appointments, presentations.
  • Follow up on the same schedule every week so nothing slips.
Step 05

Practice with people who have done it

The fastest difference between agents who stick and agents who quit is coaching. Role play your presentations, review recorded calls, and get feedback from producers who currently sell. A structured plan with weekly milestones beats guessing your way through month one.

That is exactly what we built the Redline 90 Day Blueprint to provide: training, sales practice, and founder-led coaching, whether you are new to sales or bringing experience.
